Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, is a safe procedure that in
volves the removal of excessive glandular tissue and fat, reducing the size of the breasts. This makes the breasts firmer and more aesthetically appealing.
At Spirit Plastic Surgery, every breast reduction surgery is performed using the newest medical technology and procedures, adhering to the highest safety standards. Our surgeons are highly trained and experienced in plastic surgery. Every step of the surgery is carefully planned to minimize the risk of complications and to meet our patients’ expectations fully.
When is breast reduction recommended?
Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is especially recommended for those who experience physical or psychological discomfort due to large breasts. At Spirit Plastic Surgery, we understand that large breasts can cause numerous issues, including postural problems, chronic back pain, skin irritation, and even breathing difficulties.
Health indications
- Postural problems and back pain: The weight of large breasts can strain the spine and back muscles, leading to pain and postural issues. Breast reduction can reduce this strain, thereby improving posture and alleviating pain.
- Skin irritation: Skin irritation can occur under large breasts, leading to severe skin infections. Reducing the size of the breast tissue prevents the skin from rubbing together and the associated problems.
Quality of life indications
- Clothing and sports difficulties: Oversized breasts can make it difficult to find proper clothing, limit sports activities, and hinder day-to-day activities. Breast reduction allows for the wearing of comfortable clothes and free movement.
- Breathing problems: In some cases, large breasts can obstruct deep breathing, especially when lying down, which can cause sleep disturbances. The surgery can improve breathing capacity and overall well-being.
Preparation for Breast Reduction Surgery
Preparations begin with an initial consultation where our plastic surgeon thoroughly examines you and provides information about the expected results. This meeting includes discussions on breast reduction techniques and the expected locations of surgical scars. We discuss potential contraindications, possible complications, and all other necessary information to ensure that you are fully aware of the surgery and all its aspects.
Before any surgical procedure, a series of medical tests are necessary to ensure the safety of the surgery. These tests may include blood tests, cardiovascular assessment with an ECG, X-rays, ultrasounds, and, if necessary, mammography. This thorough evaluation helps identify any potential risks and optimize the surgical plan.
Types of Breast Reduction Surgeries
We offer several surgical techniques, including the “Short Scar” method, which involves minimal scarring, and the traditional “Inverted T” incision, ideal for reducing larger breasts. The most suitable technique is chosen based on individual needs.
- Short Scar Technique: Ideal for those who wish to minimize the visibility of post-surgical scars. This method involves a circular incision around the nipple, complemented by a short vertical scar. It is particularly suitable for medium breast reductions and preserves the natural shape of the breasts while significantly reducing their weight and size.
- Traditional (Inverted T or Anchor Incision): This technique is used for significant breast reduction and reshaping. It starts with an incision around the nipple, continues with a short vertical line down to the breast crease, and ends with a longer horizontal incision along the fold, creating an anchor-shaped scar. This method is excellent for removing a larger amount of breast tissue and drastically reshaping the breasts.
Breast Reduction Surgery Process
During breast reduction surgery, we remove excess fatty tissue and part of the glandular tissue, which allows for significant modifications in the size and shape of the breasts. The remaining tissues are reshaped by the surgeon to ensure that the new breast shape harmoniously fits the patient’s body type, enhancing their confidence and comfort.
The surgery typically lasts about 3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Most patients are required to spend one night in the hospital after the surgery.
Post-Operative Care
The post-operative recovery period is crucial for achieving successful and lasting results. At Spirit Plastic Surgery, we provide all the necessary information and support to make this period as comfortable and smooth as possible. Here are some key guidelines and recommendations to follow after the surgery:
- Rest and Leave: It is recommended to take complete rest for the first two weeks after surgery, and you should take at least two weeks off from work. During this time, it is important to avoid physical strain and stay as restful as possible to facilitate the healing process.
- Wearing a Compression Bra: For the first 4-6 weeks after surgery, you must continuously wear the compression bra provided by our clinic. This bra helps maintain the shape of the newly formed breasts, reduces swelling, and supports healing. It is recommended to wear a sports bra for up to six months, especially during physical activities.
- Physical Activity: Avoid all heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity for the first 6-8 weeks post-surgery. Light exercise, such as walking, can usually begin three weeks after surgery, but any further activity should be gradually incorporated based on the doctor’s recommendations.
- Scar Care and Sun Exposure: Taking care of the surgical scars is an important part of the recovery process. Avoid direct sunlight and the use of tanning beds for the first 3-6 months after surgery as UV radiation can worsen the appearance of scars. Complete healing of the scars can take several months, but they will gradually fade over time.
