Removal of Subcutaneous Soft Tissue Lesions

At Spirit Plastic Surgery, we offer safe and efficient removal of various benign subcutaneous soft tissue lesions such as fibromas, atheromas, lipomas, and cysts. These procedures are performed by our expert plastic surgeons under local anesthesia, ensuring minimal discomfort and a quick recovery for our patients. Even though these conditions are usually harmless, their removal may be necessary for aesthetic reasons or to prevent complications.
Types of Subcutaneous Lesions
Fibroma
A fibroma is a soft, stalk-like, and brownish growth that can appear anywhere on the body. It is a benign proliferation of connective tissue cells and is usually asymptomatic, though it can be aesthetically displeasing.
Atheroma
Commonly referred to as a sebaceous cyst, an atheroma is typically more of an aesthetic concern. However, when inflamed, it can cause pain or even fever. Atheromas develop due to a blockage in the sebaceous gland ducts and are most commonly found on the scalp, trunk, and face.
While benign, atheromas are often removed to prevent inflammation or for cosmetic reasons. In cases of inflammation, urgent surgery may be required to prevent spontaneous rupture and permanent scarring. By removing the atheroma surgically, we can address the issue quickly and with minimal aesthetic impact.
Lipoma
Lipomas are benign fatty tumors that develop under the skin and are generally only symptomatic if they grow large enough to press on surrounding nerves.
Typically soft and mobile, lipomas can vary in size and are most commonly found on the legs, arms, or torso, but can also appear on more visible areas such as the neck, face, and scalp. Lipomas are usually harmless and often removed for aesthetic reasons. If they remain small and cause no discomfort, removal may not be necessary. However, if they grow larger than five centimeters or start causing discomfort, surgical removal is advised.
Cyst
Cysts commonly occur near joints and tendons, often filled with joint fluid. These can cause pressure symptoms on surrounding tissues and may also present aesthetic concerns due to their noticeable size.
The Procedure for Removing Benign Subcutaneous Lesions
Surgical removal of benign subcutaneous lesions is a quick and straightforward procedure, usually performed under local anesthesia if the lesion is not inflamed. During the surgery, our plastic surgeon removes the tumor along with its capsule and closes the incision with an aesthetic skin suture to minimize scarring. In cases where an atheroma is inflamed, the primary goal is to drain the pus and treat the inflammation, though it may not always be possible to remove the entire capsule in this state.
Histological Examination
In all cases, the excised material is sent for histological examination, ensuring a precise diagnosis. An official pathology report is provided for the patient after the analysis.
